What are the school demographics?
The state tracks the race and ethnicity of students to evaluate how schools are serving groups who have been historically discriminated against, with a focus on identifying and addressing continued inequities in student experiences and outcomes. Racial and ethnic data is also used to ensure schools are in compliance with state and federal laws.
Why this matters
Texas serves more than 5.5 million students, operating
the second-largest public school system in the U.S. and
educating one of the most diverse student populations in
the country. Enrollment trends suggest the student population
will soon be majority Hispanic. The state's growth has been
bringing diversity to pockets of the state that were once nearly
all white, transforming the racial makeup of public school classrooms, and
raising questions about how those schools are governed.
